Portage - On August 24, 2021 the citizens of Portage were made aware of a situation between a business owner and the city of Portage. Many of us attended a city common council meeting to support the business owner in addressing the council on this situation being on the agenda.
The business owner was denied the ability to address the council. Many months of hard work between citizens and City Government resulted in changing City Ordinance to allow citizens to address the council at the BEGINNING of every meeting. We could now address the council on a agenda topic before they took action.
Until last night. In opposition to what the common council and citizens codified to ensure we can be heard. Public comments was moved to the end of meeting, after action on agenda items had already taken place. A alder-person objected without success. Many that had signed up for comment left the meeting, with no longer being provided the opportunity citizens and city government had worked so hard to provide.
